Whatever your expectations for the Manchester United v Bournemouth match, Erik ten Hag’s side sunk lower than anyone would have predicted.
Following on from an encouraging win against Chelsea in midweek, Erik ten Hag‘s wildly unpredictable team then lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth.
It was an awful performance, with United punished for defensive errors and struggling to carve out any notable scoring chances.
Gone are the heady days of last season where United were impenetrable at Old Trafford. This season the fortress has fallen.
Manchester United set unwanted Premier League first
Manchester United’s defeat to Bournemouth set records for all the wrong reasons.
Notably, it was the club’s worst-ever home defeat to a Premier League side in the bottom half of the table.
TNT Sports report: “Man United’s defeat to Bournemouth was the first time in Premier League history they have lost a game at Old Trafford by 3+ goals against a team in the bottom half of the table.”
This places in context just how bad a result it really was. And it was almost 4-0, with a fourth Bournemouth goal disallowed late on.
More unwanted Manchester United numbers
This was not the only unwanted statistic to emerge from Manchester United’s latest Premier League loss.
It was Bournemouth’s first ever Premier League win at Old Trafford. They were the only top flight team this season never to have won away at United.
Manchester United have also now embarrassingly lost more games in the 10 years since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, than in the whole 26 games he was in charge.
That really sums up how the club’s dominance has waned. It feels like a long way back.
