Manchester United and Premier League enforcer Scott McTominay has been nominated for Scotland’s 2023 Player of the Year award after a stellar 12 months at international level.

While his role in the Red Devils XI continues to be a source of much debate, you’d struggle to find a single Scotland fan north of the border who believes they would be better off without a player who – during Euro 2024 qualifying – has only been outscored by Romelu Lukaku, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane. Some company.

Scott McTominay scoring goals for Scotland and Man United

With seven, Scott McTomninay is level with Rasmus Hojlund in the Golden Boot charts. And while he looks destined to miss out than award – Lukaku is cruising at the top of the rankings with 14 to his name – McTominay could still end 2023 making room on his mantelpiece for a well-earned chunk of silver.

The Manchester United academy graduate has – unsurprisingly – been nominated for Scotland’s Player of the Year award. He is likely to be the clear favourite too, with all due respect to fellow nominees Andy Robertson (Liverpool), Angus Gunn (Norwich City), Callum McGregor (Celtic), John McGinn (Aston Villa) and Ryan Porteous (Watford).

McTominay has scored seven of his eight Scotland goals in 2023. Two of those came in a famous win over Spain in the spring. Steve Clarke’s side secured qualification for next summer’s European Championships with two games to spare.

Player of the Year nominee

“Scott has really stepped up and taken his game to another level during Euro 2024 qualifying,” James McFadden, capped nearly 50 times by Scotland between 2002 and 2010, tells The Herald. “He is now one of the country’s best players.

“The goals he has scored have been absolutely invaluable for them. Would Scotland be in the Euros at this early stage without him? It is doubtful.”

With six, McTominay is Man United’s top scorer so far this season too. He even captained the Red Devils to a 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Sunday in Bruno Fernandes’ absence.
