Scott McTominay’s ‘incredible’ recent form for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United has earned the resurgent midfielder plenty of praise from one former Premier League goalscorer.
With two against Chelsea in midweek, the 2023/24 campaign is already Scott McTominay’s most prolific in the top-flight. In all competitions, the Manchester United academy graduate has seven for club and country.
Impressive indeed. Especially when you consider that the Vicar of Dibley Christmas special hasn’t even hit our screens just yet, McTominay exploding out of the blocks and emerging as the most consistent goal threat in an often wasteful United side.
McTominay was United’s hero again during Wednesday’s much-needed 2-1 victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side, firing home a clinical volley before crunching a second-half header past Robert Sanchez to lift the Red Devils to within three points of Man City and level with Tottenham Hotspur.

Scott McTominay in best-ever Man United form
“He’s been incredible, by the way,” Darren Bent, scorer of over 100 Premier League goals for the likes of Spurs, Aston Villa and Sunderland, tells talkSPORT (7 December, 5pm).
“Fair play to him. What I like about him is how honest he is.
“What people want nowadays is a goalscoring midfielder, and he could be that. He is always in the box. The first goal, his first touch… fair play to him. Well played.”
While there are still some concerns about how McTominay affects the balance of this Manchester United team, the Scotland international’s remarkable, almost Paul Scholes-esque knack for finishing off chances inside the penalty area is making a player who looked destined to leave over the summer one of the first names on Ten Hag’s team sheet these days.
Great Scott
“He’s playing unbelievable at the moment,” Wes Brown, a Champions League winner under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008, tells MUTV. “The runs into the box…
“He makes himself a nuisance. People can’t pick him up.”
“Scott’s performance is all action. Quality,” adds John O’Shea, McTominay missing a number of chances to claim a first-ever senior hat-trick.
“(He may be) disappointed not come away with the match ball. He’s a definite starter in the team going forward.”
