Manchester United’s Scott McTominay has ‘taken his game to another level’ with the midfielder’s Scotland displays sparking his Premier League resurgence.
Would Scotland have already secured a seat on the plane to next summer’s European Championships without him? What’s more, would Scott McTominay be back in the Manchester United XI without his devastating displays at international level?
There is an argument that Scott McTominay needs Scotland as much as they need him, the midfielder often saving his best performances for the international break and forcing his way back into Erik ten Hag’s plans as a result.

Scott McTominay back in Man United XI
“Scott has really stepped up and taken his game to another level during Euro 2024 qualifying,” James McFadden, capped nearly 50 times by Scotland between 2002 and 2010, tells The Herald. “He is now one of the country’s best players.
“The goals he has scored have been absolutely invaluable for them. Would Scotland be in the Euros at this early stage without him? It is doubtful.”
McTominay stayed at United after the Red Devils rejected a £20 million bid from West Ham over the summer. His box-crashing abilities have come in very handy at club level too, the academy graduate scoring twice in stoppage time against Brentford before finding the net again against Sheffield United.
‘Some brilliant goals’
“(McTominay has) managed to score some brilliant goals, and big, important goals, for Scotland. He has managed to get himself back into the Man United starting line-up on the back of his Scotland form,” McFadden adds.
“I actually think there will be even more to come from Scott McTominay. He has got steadily better the longer he has played for Scotland over the years.
“He is now back in the Manchester United team and has pitched in with some big goals there as well. That can only help his confidence and form. As I say, I think that there is more to come from Scott.”
McTominay now has nine goals for club and country since the start of 2023/24.
