Manager who compared himself to Ruben Amorim and predicted Man United ‘masterpiece’ now sacked

Ruben Amorim will hope his Manchester United career ends up very differently to Vitor Pereira at Wolves.

Earlier this season, Ruben Amorim’s job was under pressure after an underwhelming start to the 2025/26 season with Manchester United.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly backed Amorim and a three-match winning streak in the Premier League quickly followed.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest marked one full year of Ruben Amorim as head coach, and the Portuguese head coach has adapted to English football well after a frustrating start.

When he was first appointed at Old Trafford, Vitor Pereira had no doubts that Amorim would be a success.

Vitor Pereira backed Ruben Amorim to succeed at Man Utd

Amorim makes up one of four Portuguese managers in the Premier League, alongside Marco Silva, Nuno Espirito Santo and Vitor Pereira.

However, Amorim lost one of his compatriots this weekend with Wolves sacking Pereira following a winless start to the season.

In November 2024, Pereira couldn’t speak highly enough about Amorim, and he even drew comparisons between them as Portuguese coaches.

Via the Premier League, Pereira said: “Portugal has many coaches spread across the different continents, with different experiences and personalities. But above all, they stand out for their competence and their ability to adapt to the environment, the culture of the countries and the clubs.

“There are many clubs that like the characteristics of the Portuguese coach, who is a strategist and develops teams that are difficult to play against.”

Specifically talking about Amorim, Pereira said: “I believe that in a more evolved, higher quality environment, such as the Premier League, he will continue his development and, with the necessary conditions, he can once again produce a masterpiece, this time in Manchester.

“He is destined for great things.”

Vitor Pereira did double over Ruben Amorim

Last season, Wolves did the double over Amorim’s United in the Premier League.

Pereira was appointed at Wolves a month after Amorim arrived in Manchester, and his second match in charge came against the Red Devils.

In what was the 2024 Boxing Day clash, United were beaten 2-0 by Wolves with Pereira getting the better of Amorim on the touchline.

Months later in April 2025, Wolves beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford to complete the double. However, it is Amorim who outlasted Pereira as a Premier League boss.

United travel to Molineux to face Wolves in early December, but Amorim will not have a chance to amend his 0% win rate against Pereira.
