Fabrizio Romano has opened up on the “reality” of the situation surrounding Luis Enrique’s continued links with Manchester United amid Michael Carrick’s interim head coach reign.

Luis Enrique is widely considered one of the best managers in the world right now and the 55-year-old has been widely hailed for his work at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for the next permanent Manchester United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.

Michael Carrick was installed as interim head coach until the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season after Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd reign finally ended.

Fabrizio Romano breaks down what is being said inside Man Utd about PSG head coach Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique’s name has been attached to Manchester United in recent months alongside other high-profile figures, including Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti.

United face a major task in trying to lure the Paris Saint-Germain manager to Old Trafford amid Enrique’s major success in the French capital with the Ligue 1 side.

Former Barcelona and Spain boss Enrique, who led PSG to a continental treble in the 2024-25 campaign, is tied down to a contract until 2027 at the Parc des Princes.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano insisted that there are some people internally at Man Utd who ‘dream’ of Enrique becoming the club’s manager.

“The reality on Luis Enrique and Manchester United is that, let me say it like this, there is someone internally at Manchester United who [are] big fan[s] and dreams of Luis Enrique as Manchester United manager one day,” he said.

“So, there is some truth in the reports in the last three months not so fresh about Luis Enrique and Man United in the sense that Manchester United have some people internally [who] have this thought of Luis Enrique one day being maybe United manager.

“But nothing more than this because, at the moment, the focus of Luis Enrique is on PSG, is on negotiating this new contract with PSG, and on the pitch, of course, so nothing more than this.”

Fabrizio Romano on Man Utd’s position around Luis Enrique at PSG and the interim reign of Michael Carrick

PSG are reportedly close to locking down United-linked Enrique’s future at the Ligue 1 club, which would be expected to keep him at the Parc des Princes until 2030.

Romano added that United are “aware” of PSG’s contract talks with Enrique and the Red Devils hold Michael Carrick in high regard after his 10-match interim spell so far.

“Also, at Manchester United, they are absolutely aware of Luis Enrique being busy with PSG [and] negotiating a new contract, and also Man United are very happy with the work done so far by Michael Carrick,” he continued.

“So, they are not doubting Michael Carrick.”

United legend Carrick has been tipped as a potential candidate to succeed former Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis at Old Trafford.
