A standout performer for Ruben Amorim in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea has earned a place in Troy Deeney’s BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week.

The Red Devils bounced back to winning ways on the weekend and Ruben Amorim saw his side clinch a vital three Premier League points at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United were in control against Chelsea in the first half after Bruno Fernandes netted the opener, with the Red Devils pulling ahead after Casemiro scored a header.

Chelsea faced an uphill task against United on Saturday evening after Blues ‘keeper Robert Sanchez was sent off in the first five minutes of the Premier League clash.

However, United manager Ruben Amorim faced his own setback after Casemiro picked up two bookings in the first half and was sent off before half-time.

BBC Sport pundit Troy Deeney singles out Bruno Fernandes after the Man Utd captain’s impact against Chelsea

Bruno Fernandes took his well-earned Manchester United goalscoring tally to 100 in his 200th Premier League appearance for the Red Devils on the weekend.

The 31-year-old United captain’s influence has waned in the 2025-26 campaign after Ruben Amorim has deployed Fernandes in a deeper role in the Red Devils’ midfield.

However, Fernandes earned rightful praise for his performance against Chelsea, with BBC Sport pundit Troy Deeney labelling the United midfielder as “Captain Fantastic.”

“I’m going to give him some love,” he told BBC Sport.

“I’m aware Chelsea were down to 10 men early on, but this was a must-win game for Manchester United and Captain Fantastic stepped up to score his 100th goal for the club.”

Fernandes saw out 87 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 result at Old Trafford before Amorim withdrew the skipper and replaced him with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Deeney suggested that United would have been “relegated” had it not been for Fernandes’ impact at the Red Devils, with the club finishing 15th last season.

The 37-year-old former Watford striker has tipped Fernandes to play the starring role for United again and believes that he could be a major “catalyst” for Amorim.

“Where would they be without this man? Relegated. That’s the answer,” he continued.

“He deserves to be in for the first time this campaign. Hopefully, this is a catalyst for United to have a really good go at this season.”

Fernandes has made six appearances for United across all competitions this season and the Portugal international has netted twice for the Red Devils so far.
