Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher did not see eye to eye with one Sky Sports pundit over Casemiro’s red card in Manchester United’s win over Chelsea.

Casemiro had a major impact in both a positive way and a negative one in Manchester United’s hard-fought result against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United were dominant against Chelsea in the first half and the Blues suffered an early blow after Robert Sanchez was sent off for his challenge on Bryan Mbeumo.

The Red Devils capitalised on the Blues being reduced to 10 men and Bruno Fernandes fired United into the lead in the 14th minute of the Premier League tie.

Casemiro found the back of the net in the first half as well after he headed home from close range, but the United midfielder would also be sent off before half-time.

Dermot Gallagher’s verdict on the red card for Casemiro in Man Utd’s 2-1 Premier League win over Chelsea at Old Trafford

Casemiro picked up two separate bookings on Saturday, with the former Real Madrid star’s first yellow coming for his late tackle on Enzo Fernandez early in the first half.

The 33-year-old was then controversially sent off deep into the first half of stoppage time, with Casemiro receiving his second yellow for his challenge on Andrey Santos.

Casemiro had his hands on Andrey Santos’ shoulders before the Brazil international brought him down, with Peter Bankes subsequently booking the United star.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher believes that Peter Bankes made the right call to brandish a second yellow for Casemiro for the challenge.

The former Premier League referee said: “The second one, people say to me, is it enough for a second yellow?

“I’m forever saying, not every tackle after a yellow card is a second yellow card, but the difference here is he has deliberately gone to pull him back.

“We see every week if anyone’s pulled back, they get a yellow card. He got the ball, but because he pulled him back.”

Sky Sports pundit Jay Bothroyd reacts to Dermot Gallagher’s stance on Casemiro’s red card for Man Utd in the Chelsea match

Trevoh Chalobah netted late in the second half for Chelsea against 10-man United, but the Red Devils held on to their lead and secured all three Premier League points.

United’s momentum going into the second half fizzled after Casemiro’s sending off, with Chelsea climbing back into the Premier League contest at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports pundit Jay Bothroyd admitted that he disagreed with Dermot Gallagher’s assessment and felt that Peter Bankes should not have booked Casemiro again.

“I’m going to disagree because I think that was harsh,” he said

“Players know what’s going on. Santos has run across Casemiro. There’s nothing you can do, apart from put your arms up and try to get out of the way.

“I think that’s really harsh to give him a second yellow. It’s a foul. But I don’t think that’s worthy of a second yellow.”

Casemiro’s red card now means that the former Real Madrid star will be unavailable for Ruben Amorim for the Premier League clash against Brentford on Saturday.
