Chelsea stance on Ben Chilwell as Manchester United offered transfer opportunity

Manchester United have already signed one full back this summer but may now have the chance to sign another before the transfer deadline.

Erik ten Hag has reunited with two more former Ajax players to bolster his back line at Manchester United.

Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have signed from Bayern Munich, joining forces with Ten Hag once again having played under him in Amsterdam.

Mazraoui made his debut against Fulham on Friday night and impressed Joshua Zirkzee in the process.

The Moroccan offers ideal versatility; he started at right back against Fulham but plays at left back on the international stage.

Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are United’s full backs with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out of action but there may be a temptation to add a natural left-footer.

Manchester United offered Ben Chilwell chance

Shaw just can’t seem to stay fit and Malacia missed the whole of last season but still hasn’t been able to return from injury.

United will be happy with Dalot and Mazraoui but a natural left back will become increasingly appealing if Shaw and Malacia’s issues continue.

TalkSPORT now claim that United have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell.

The England left back wasn’t involved against Manchester City on Sunday and will be allowed to leave Chelsea this month.

The offer towards United has most likely come from Chilwell’s representatives rather than directly from Chelsea, but the proposal gives United and Ten Hag something to think about.

Chilwell is a proven Premier League left back at 27 and has racked up more than 150 top-flight appearances.

Chilwell already has a rapport with Harry Maguire from their time at Leicester City whilst the likes of Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford will be familiar to him from England duty.

United could do worse than Chilwell, but it will depend on Chelsea’s demands for a defender they paid £50million to sign in 2020, according to Sky Sports.

Enzo Maresca on Chilwell future

Chilwell finds himself down the pecking order at Chelsea and new boss Maresca has admitted that he can go.

Maresca has told The Independent that Chilwell will struggle for first-team minutes this season, just like teammate Raheem Sterling.

Maresca added that his stance on Chilwell is ‘not brutal, it’s honest’ as he believes the left back needs to move on.

“I spoke with Raheem [Sterling] before Manchester City, I said that he is going to struggle to get minutes with us. With Chilly [Chilwell] I said he is a lovely guy, but with his position, he’s going to struggle with us. It’s not brutal, it’s honest,” said Maresca.

Chelsea showed a willingness to deal with United last summer by allowing Mason Mount to move to Old Trafford.

United now need to make a decision on moving for Chilwell with Ten Hag not only operating on a tight budget after four summer signings, but also prioritising the signing of midfielder Manuel Ugarte from PSG.
