Ryan Giggs has revealed that an unofficial role in football he has “came by chance” and the Manchester United legend explained the benefit that it has brought.
The 51-year-old Welshman has been out of management since 2020 after he resigned from his post as the head coach of the Wales national team.
The Manchester United legend has hinted at a potential return to the dugout as a manager, but Ryan Giggs has switched his full attention elsewhere.
The former Wales boss is a co-owner of Salford City alongside fellow ‘Class of ‘92’ stars and Giggs has taken up one active role at the League Two side.
Giggs has been working behind the scenes as director of football after he took up the role in 2024, with Salford City not formally announcing the initial appointment.
The ex-Wales and United star has become an influential figure at Moor Lane amid Salford City’s push for League One promotion in the 2024-25 campaign.

Giggs on one role at Salford City
Salford City are currently third in League Two and Karl Robinson’s men are one point behind Crewe Alexandra and 13 points adrift from league leaders Walsall.
The Ammies were in action on the weekend for the FA Cup and Salford City travelled to the Etihad for a tough encounter with Manchester City.
Defending Premier League champions Manchester City steam-rolled Karl Robinson’s side and Pep Guardiola’s men inflicted a crushing 8-0 defeat in the third-round tie.
Ryan Giggs’ influence has extended at Salford City beyond his role as director of football, with the Manchester United legend now opening up about it.
The former Wales international has often been spotted in the dugout alongside Salford City manager Karl Robinson and assistant manager Alex Bruce.
Speaking to The Athletic, Giggs was asked if there has been any opposition to him being in the Salford dugout and he admitted that he was “enjoying” his time there.
“I’m just concentrating on what I’m doing at this present moment in time,” he said, as per The New York Times.
“You never know what’s going to happen in the future. I can only control what I can control.
“It came by chance, coming in the dugout [with Salford]… In a League Two team, saving every little bit of salary helps: we can get maybe a better gym kit, maybe we can get a player on loan.
“Whether I’m going to stay in the dugout, that’s up to Karl, but at the moment I’m enjoying it.”
Giggs speaks out on his future
Giggs has kept a low profile in the public limelight after he was cleared of allegations of assault on his ex-partner and her sister in 2023.
The United legend, who staunchly denied the allegations of assault and controlling and coercive behaviour, insisted that he is now ‘focused’ on “moving forward.”
“It was a difficult time for everyone,” Giggs said.
“But my focus now is moving forward and, at the moment, enjoying being in the dugout and trying to get Salford up to League One.”
