Manchester United are in the process of deciding who will coach the first team for the remainder of the season, with Michael Carrick emerging as an early contender to return to the Old Trafford dugout temporarily.
It was announced on Monday morning that Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach after 14 months.
Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public backing just three months ago, Amorim has been dismissed at Old Trafford after a topsy-turvy first half to the 2025/26 campaign.
Ruben Amorim SACKED – What is your INSTANT REACTION?
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team, but it remains to be seen how many matches the Scot will serve as interim manager.
Fletcher has other responsibilities currently, like managing United’s U18s, and there are questions over whether he has the experience to guide the team to European qualification.
United are currently 6th in the Premier League and Fletcher will be in the dugout when the Red Devils travel to Burnley on Wednesday night.

Michael Carrick in line for second stint as Man Utd interim manager
Journalists are investigating United’s next steps.
With improved results and performances from last season, nobody thought there would be a managerial change after United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday.
That was until Amorim challenged Ineos in such a public manner that his job became untenable.
Fletcher’s spell as interim manager could be short-lived, with reports from The i Paper suggesting that Michael Carrick is among the top contenders to takeover until the end of the season.
It is believed that Oliver Glasner is the current top target for a permanent appointment in the summer, which means they will be going down the route of an interim manager for the foreseeable future.

The report outlines that United plan for Fletcher to take charge against Burnley and then potentially the weekend clash with Brighton in the FA Cup.
Carrick was sacked as Middlesbrough manager at the end of last season and has been out of work since. He previously served as caretaker manager at Old Trafford following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021.
It is not yet known whether Carrick would be interested in returning to United temporarily. The former England international has also been linked with the West Ham job in recent days.
Michael Carrick record as Man Utd interim manager
When Solskjaer was sacked in 2021, United turned to Carrick for three matches.
Carrick’s brief tenure consisted of an unbeaten record as he steadied the ship before it sank under Ralf Rangnick.
United won their first match under Carrick as Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho scored in a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League.
In the second match, United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the Premier League. Sancho was credited with scoring in back-to-back games.
Finally, Carrick recorded a 3-2 win over Arsenal in his last game as interim manager at United. The Gunners bizarrely opened the scoring as David de Gea was on the floor, injured.
The Red Devils fought back with a goal from Bruno Fernandes and a brace from Ronaldo.
