Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to be linked with a sensational return to Manchester United.

1999 Treble winning hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fulfilled his dream when he managed Manchester United between 2018 and 2021. Now he could get a remarkable second chance in the Old Trafford dugout.

Ruben Amorim’s sudden sacking has United searching for an interim boss to take the helm until the end of the season.

Solskjaer is keen on an emotional return to United and is holding talks with bosses.

United fans have already given a positive verdict on Solskjaer’s return, with the majority of voters on our TalkingPoints poll supporting his potential comeback.

‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should never have been fired’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in 2021 after a poor run of form that culminated with a 4-1 defeat to Watford. It felt like his project had collapsed.

But the years since have not been kind and United have failed to find any sustained success since Solskjaer. Ralf Rangnick, Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim have all tried, but the club have been on a downward trajectory, finishing 15th last season.

Continuing the debate over Solskjaer on our TalkingPoints platform, fans have been making the point that Ole should never have been fired.

One wrote: “Should not have been sacked in the first place, just needs really good right hand man, that’s the key role to be filled.”

Another fan added: “Should never have got rid of him in first place he knows what the club is about.”

A third supporter voiced fears that even on an interim basis, Solskjaer could be set up for failure.

“He wasn’t given enough time the first time, he will just be thrown under the bus AGAIN.”

Another supporter made the point that none of Solskjaer’s successors have measured up, and pointed the blame at the board.

“Can’t understand anyone that wouldn’t have Ole back at the club. He overachieved and never should have been sacked in the first place!

“Who else exactly has come even close to matching City as a manager at Utd!? Don’t forget he was sacked by incompetent directors and shareholders.”

And another fan pointed out that two of Manchester United’s best players at present are a duo who were signed by Solskjaer.

“I think it’s a good idea for Manchester United to bring him back as he is the one who brought Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo who are the real heroes of the club right now.”

Michael Carrick has his supporters too

Michael Carrick is Solskjaer’s biggest rival to land the interim job, if Darren Fletcher is not retained until the end of the season.

Carrick was Solskjaer’s assistant and briefly managed United on a caretaker basis after the Norwegian was axed.

One fan wrote: “Carrick caretaker, Conte in the Summer.”

Another added: “Michael Carrick should be given a chance to manage Man United.”

Both Carrick and Solskjaer have met with Ineos, with both highly regarded. After the big call firing Amorim, they are taking their time to make a decision on the next move.
