Man Utd fans deeply divided about key Harry Maguire stat after Luton Town win

Manchester United fans are divided over a key Harry Maguire stat after the England defender impressed with his performance against Luton Town at Old Trafford.

Maguire has seen a remarkable turnaround at United this season after he was stripped of the club captaincy and was struggling for regular first-team minutes.

The 30-year-old ex-United captain was heavily linked with a move away last summer, but Maguire remained at the club and has been fighting for his place.

With Lisandro Martinez suffering a long-term injury, Maguire has since stepped up in the United backline and established himself as a starter under manager Erik ten Hag.

The United defender has won over fans with his recent performances, with Ten Hag deploying Maguire alongside Jonny Evans ahead of Raphael Varane.

Maguire starred in his side’s 1-0 win over Luton on Saturday and was paired alongside match-winner Victor Lindelof, who stepped in for an injured Evans.

United fans impressed with Maguire’s passing contribution

Maguire has come under scathing criticism since his £80m move to Old Trafford in 2019 and his previous role as United captain.

However, the United centre-back delivered a superb showing against Luton and his passing stats from the Premier League contest made the rounds on Reddit.

Maguire successfully completed 78 of 86 passes in the match, with the England international finding his teammates with laser-like passes from long distances.

The former Leicester City star’s passing stats divided fans, with some calling him a prime David Beckham “regen” while others pointed out the quality of his opposition.

“That one misplaced pass out of play is what will be all over social media,” one fan said.

Someone else commented: “Good for him. Having [Andre] Onana behind him helps as well. There was one time we were being countered and the ball was put through behind Maguire. Harry was trying so hard to run back […].”

“Prime [David] Beckham regen,” a third simply stated.

While a fourth wrote: “Strong contender for MOTM for me. When he was bombing forward, it really shook up the Luton defensive shape. Reminds me of the occasional full-field runs by ‘Sheasy’ [John O’Shea].”

And a fifth added: “I play right CB and I’m genuinely working with an individual coach to try and play that Maguire pass out to the left. He does it so well and it just beats the press.”

Other United fans not impressed with stat

“More like playing against Luton really helps,” one Redditor responded.

Another posted: “So Maguire is again United material? [These] comical reactions appeared over time with [Victor] Lindelof, [Anthony] Martial, [Scott] McTominay and others who are well paid and will leave only for free from United.”

A third fan said: “This just shows he’s not elite and breaking lines with his passing. How many of these passes are directly vertical into a player in between opposing midfield and defence? Some good switching of [the] play but not a lot of disguise on his passes.”

While a fourth wrote: “He’s always been good at those long balls forward, none of this should be a shock.”
