Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed his “favourite-ever” picture from his prolific playing career, despite admitting the “silly” mistake that he made in the match.

Scholes spent his entire legendary career at Old Trafford and etched his name in the history books as one of the best Premier League midfielders of all time.

The 48-year-old ex-midfielder hoovered up the major silverware under legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with Scholes finally retiring in 2013.

Scholes lifted a whopping 11 Premier League titles, a Champions League, three FA Cups and two League Cups during his trophy-laden career at United.

The ex-United star made a staggering 716 appearances for the club and scored 155 times and registered 81 assists across his two separate spells at Old Trafford.

While Scholes has a long list of achievements at United, the footballer-turned-pundit endured low points as well and one such example featured in his favourite photo.

Scholes’ favourite United photo

Scholes took to Instagram Stories and posted his favourite photo from his time at United, with the former England midfielder standing alongside five club legends.

Joining Scholes in the photo are Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand, with all five men wearing United’s black kit.

However, the picture is from the 2005 FA Cup final where United suffered a penalty shootout defeat to fierce rivals Arsenal at the then-Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Unfortunately for Scholes, the Three Lions international saw his spot-kick effort denied by former Arsenal shot-stopper Jens Lehmann.

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira then stepped up and scored the winning penalty for the Gunners, with Arsene Wenger’s men walking away with the ultimate bragging rights.

Posting on Instagram, Scholes said: “My favourite-ever pic apart from being the only silly t**t to miss a pen.”

Scholes’ regret over 2005 FA Cup final

While Scholes missed out on the FA Cup trophy in 2005, the United legend would keep on winning silverware until his retirement from football.

The former United midfielder lifted the FA Cup three times in his career, with his last win coming in the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Millwall in the 2004 final.

Scholes later recalled his missed penalty against Arsenal in the final and claimed that it was a contest that United should have won.

Speaking in a 2015 piece for the London Evening Standard, Scholes wrote: “In 2005, I missed the only penalty in the shootout with Arsenal in a final we should have won.

“There are no words of consolation that will do in those circumstances. Your teammates tend to leave you to it. They know that you will be brooding on it all summer.”
