Manchester United supporters are eagerly awaiting a potential debut for new signing Matthijs de Ligt.
Erik ten Hag has confirmed Matthijs de Ligt will be in the squad to face Fulham in the Premier League’s opening fixture.
It is 48 hours since Matthijs de Ligt clinched his move to Manchester United along with Noussair Mazraoui, much to the annoyance of Bayern Munich supporters.
De Ligt will wear the number four shirt, and could now make his debut at Old Trafford, potentially even as a starter.
Matthijs de Ligt impresses in training
Matthijs de Ligt was pictured in training photos 24 hours ago, and now the club have released new footage from the session.
De Ligt is seen showing how comfortable he is on the ball and barking instructions at his teammates, demonstrating his leadership qualities.
Manchester United fans on social media were impressed, commenting how the early footage of De Ligt was exactly what they wanted to see.
One supporter wrote: “De Ligt is easily going to be a fan favourite. A proper leader,” and another agreed, “Easily our future captain.”
Another fan noted: “Look at how vocal he is, unpopular opinion but De Ligt might be the best signing out of the lot.”
A fourth fan added: “De Ligt training vids – Looks sharp,” with another supporting writing: “De Ligt will be a gem for us, he looks ready to go.”
One supporter confidently tipped De Ligt for a big honour, writing: “Player of the season loading.”
Another expressed happiness that United had chosen to sign the Bayern Munich defender, writing: “Look at the thoroughbred De Ligt absolute powerhouse rolls royce of a centre thank heavens we skipped Branthwaite.”
And a further fan wrote: “Having watched De Ligt from when he was 18. A monster of a signing now. So glad he’s a Manchester United player! Future Captain.”
One more United account expressed excitement at the prospect of seeing De Ligt partner Lisandro Martinez.
How De Ligt fits in
During the next three months when Leny Yoro is injured, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez will be Manchester United’s first choice centre-backs.
Harry Maguire will still get game time too, as United will want to manage both of their minutes carefully, as Martinez and De Ligt have had short pre-seasons.
On Friday night against Fulham, we could see both Martinez and De Ligt start, with the Argentine moving back into the centre after his emergency left-back role in the Community Shield.
Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot will be at full-back, although it is unclear who will start on the right or the left.
