There were plenty of positives to take from Manchester United’s opening-day win over Fulham.
Joshua Zirkzee announced himself at Old Trafford with a late winner to give Erik ten Hag’s side a 1-0 win and a vital three points.
Ten Hag warned supporters before the match that his side were not ready for the start of the season, but many players were never going to be at full fitness after arriving late back to training following Euro 2024 and the Copa America.
Nevertheless, there were still some really strong and impressive performances within United’s squad, including a fantastic debut from Noussair Mazraoui.
Another standout performer was Casemiro, who looked back to his best in the heart of midfield.
The Brazilian was strong and aggressive defensively but was also a big part of United’s build-up play. Ultimately, he looked more like the Casemiro that United signed in 2022 rather than the version from last season.

Casemiro performance vs Fulham
Casemiro’s performances dropped off so alarmingly last season that much of this summer’s talk has been about who United will sign to replace him.
Manuel Ugarte is still pushing to join United from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, and the Uruguayan would likely take Casemiro’s spot in the starting lineup alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
But Casemiro’s performance against Fulham showed that he still has plenty to offer this season. If anything, a role where he can be rotated in the midfield could suit him perfectly.
He ended the match with three key passes, four clearances, four tackles and two big chances created. Easily one of the best players on the pitch.
But it wasn’t just Casemiro’s performance that United fans were impressed by, they also spotted a physical transformation since last season.
Man United fans spot Casemiro transformation
United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, spotted that Casemiro looks in great shape for the new season and looks much leaner than last campaign.
One supporter wrote “Casemiro looks like a different player from last season”. They added “looks more slim, hope we can get 22/23 Casemiro back”
Another said “Casemiro looks slim and trim this season”, while a third wrote “I can’t be the only one seeing this, Casemiro looks slim compared to last season.”
Another fan pointed out “Casemiro looks so slim here”.

Casemiro’s transformation over the summer was also pointed out by United legend Roy Keane, who said on Sky Sports, “A difficult spell last year, but he looks a bit leaner.
“Hopefully he’s had a good break, and he’s come back refreshed. Listen, they were open last year in midfield, and he didn’t play particularly well, but I wouldn’t be writing him off.”
