Luke Shaw shows encouraging glimpses of his best form against Burnley

Manchester United once again squandered a lead and failed to put the game to bed in the 1-1 draw at Burnley, but Luke Shaw’s performance should offer some comfort.

With Alex Telles unavailable for the trip to Turf Moor due to testing positive for Covid-19, Shaw was making his first Premier League appearance since our 1-0 defeat against Wolves.

The England left-back missed the 2-2 draw at Villa Park due to suspension and missed the wins against Brentford and West Ham after picking up a hamstring injury in training.

With the buoyant Jadon Sancho playing in front of him, the England internationals look to be establishing a good understanding of one and others games.

And when Sancho does swap flanks, Shaw has an equally fruitful partnership with Marcus Rashford.

Similar to Harry Maguire, Shaw’s form has alluded him on too many occasions this season and has struggled to kick on following his European Championship exploits.

He’s looked vulnerable defensively and his trademark galloping runs from deep have been sparse.

But against the Clarets, the 26-year-old looked a constant attacking threat for the Reds.

Making those lung-busting runs from inside his own half, Shaw’s ball-carrying speed left the Burnley players trailing in his wake.

After linking up with Rashford down the left, United’s number 23 showed great composure to pick out Paul Pogba with his cutback.

Only Bruno Fernandes (7) created more chances than Shaw (3) against Sean Dyche’s side, according to WhoScored.

No player from either team had more touches than Shaw (92). His assist for Pogba in East Lancashire was his first in the Premier League since setting up Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal, in his homecoming versus Newcastle back in September.

Luke Shaw’s performance against Burnley should mean he starts against his former club Southampton on Saturday regardless of whether Telles is fit enough to return or not.
