Lisandro Martinez has sent a rallying message to his Manchester United teammates after the Red Devils’ shock 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League table and have only won three league matches out of nine under manager Erik ten Hag this season.
The Red Devils travelled to the London Stadium on the weekend and United largely impressed in the first half with a dominating performance against the Hammers.
However, Erik ten Hag’s men were unable to capitalise on their clear-cut chances and West Ham punished United in the second half at the London Stadium.
Crysencio Summerville broke the deadlock in the 74th minute before United pulled one back through Casemiro only seven minutes later in the Premier League match.
West Ham would inflict a major blow on United after a controversial VAR intervention led to a penalty for the Hammers near the end of the match.
Jarrod Bowen beat Andre Onana from the spot-kick and West Ham weathered the 12 minutes of injury time to seal all three points against the Red Devils.
Martinez’s message to Man Utd players
Manchester United will now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup for Wednesday evening’s round-of-16 clash against Leicester City at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s side will then welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday for their next Premier League clash, with the Red Devils facing a tough test against the Blues.
United manager Ten Hag has been under mounting pressure over his side’s run of results and the 54-year-old Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
Lisandro Martinez, who played the full match against West Ham, has told his United teammates that they must be offering “more” when they are on the pitch.
“Everyone fights and we give everything, but I think we have to give more,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“We have to know that in football it is a mental game and we have to keep believing and believe to the end.
“Be hungry and today we played very well in the first half, but in the second half, we dropped [our levels].
“We concede the two goals and we couldn’t win the game. I am so disappointed today, honestly.”
Ten Hag remains confident in Man Utd
Despite United’s lacklustre start to the 2024-25 campaign, Ten Hag has insisted that he has “trust” in his side and believes United can still turn the season around.
“I trust in my team, it is not about correcting them, it is about trusting them for the next game,” he said at his post-match press conference.
“I believe my players are capable of this. I trust them and encourage them to keep going.
“They have been doing this for long periods over this game and other games. Eventually, we will find the net and we will win more games.”
