Lingard and Elanga lead reaction to D'Mani Mellor's departure post

Manchester United forward D’Mani Mellor announced via Instagram that he will be leaving the club this summer when his contract was up.

Rather than wait for his name to be listed on United’s impending announcement of released players, Mellor is taking his destiny into his own hands.

The 21-year-old striker says he is looking forward to the next chapter of his career, as he sets about trying to find a new club. It would not be a surprise if he already has a move lined up.

What we have learned in the reaction to Mellor’s departure post, is how incredibly popular he is with his teammates past and present across academy level.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

Reaction to D’Mani Mellor’s departure post

There was a huge reaction to Mellor’s departure post, some from former teammates who have since left the club, like Angel Gomes and Aidan Barlow.

First team star Jesse Lingard was on the pitch when Mellor made his first team debut against Astana, and Anthony Elanga also knows him well. Both players left messages in response.

There was also huge respect from the younger players, many of who have looked up to Mellor in the under-23s this season to guide them along, during the second half of the campaign. Alvaro Fernandez and Shola Shoretire were among the several who reached out.

Mellor, 21, scored eight goals for United’s under-23 team in the second half of this season, after a brief loan at Salford City where he did not get a proper chance.

He had just fought back from an ACL injury which required two operations, and just for him to be back playing football again regularly in 2022 and scoring goals has been a great success.

The year has gone to plan for him, considering that a long-term stay at United was never likely. This season was about recovery from injury, to set him on his way for a career elsewhere, and to that end, he is on track, with an important decision over his next move awaiting. The strong way he has ended this season will only enhance his options.
