Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has become the second figure from the Anfield club to criticise Manchester United’s tactics following Sunday’s draw.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United picked up a vital point against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and arguably had the better chances to win the game but Rasmus Hojlund was denied by a brilliant save from Alisson.
The home side had the majority of the possession at Anfield but struggled to turn this control of the ball and territory into clear-cut chances.
Andre Onana did make a couple of saves of note but the Cameroon international, despite performing admirably, didn’t have a whole lot to do in Merseyside.

Klopp critical of United
Well, after Virgil Van Dijk was very critical of the Red Devils in the immediate aftermath of the draw, which led to Roy Keane firing back at the Dutchman, Klopp has become the next figure from Liverpool to criticise United.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the game, the German manager was full of praise for his team’s 5-1 demolition of West Ham United to advance to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
“Things clicked tonight when they didn’t on Sunday,” Klopp admitted. “I am not sure I am allowed to talk about what Man Utd did but they defended deeply.
“(We had) 34 shots…some keeper saves. Tonight we scored in these moments, sometimes the difference is an inch.”
This rather bizarre unhappiness from the Merseyside club that the Red Devils sat deep and looked to play on the counter-attack is just exactly that, bizarre.
United were coming into the game off the back of a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League and a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich which meant the Red Devils were out of the Champions League.
United’s tactics worked
Unlike the game against Manchester City at Old Trafford, when Ten Hag’s side went gung-ho against Guardiola’s team and lost 3-0, defending deep and looking to exploit the gaps in the opposition’s defence works.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used to be lambasted for doing the same thing but the reality is that this style of play works, especially in the bigger games when you might not be favourites.
United take on high-flying Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Boxing Day and if the Red Devils were to line up similarly to how they did at Anfield, they could pick up a much-needed victory.
