Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has made a few comments that have not gone down well with the Manchester United faithful following the 0-0 draw.
The pressure was on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to get a result at Anfield with Manchester United coming into the game off the back of back-to-back defeats as well as elimination from the Champions League.
There were fears that Erik ten Hag was hurtling towards the same fate as Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese manager was sacked following a dismal performance at Anfield.
The result didn’t pan out this way, however, Ten Hag’s Reds were resolute and thoroughly deserved their point despite their struggles to create chances consistently.

Van Dijk on United
Virgil Van Dijk was put up for an interview by Sky Sports following the bore draw at Anfield and the Dutch defender was not happy with how United performed.
“There was only one team trying to win the game but unfortunately it did not happen,” Van Dijk said.
“We were superior in all aspects, they were hoping to hurt us on the counter and they are buzzing with a point.”
This screams of sour grapes from the former Southampton defender as really, barring a few moments of quality, the hosts were so poor throughout and failed to muster up many chances of their own.
United, meanwhile, had a couple of moments with Rasmus Hojlund having the best chance of the game but the Dane couldn’t keep his composure and was denied by Alisson.
The Anfield club have a habit of being frustrated when a team doesn’t set up how they like it and Ten Hag’s decision to sit back and allow the hosts to come onto them was a good move in the end.
Liverpool’s frustration
Truth be told, the Merseyside club were far from their best and struggled to carve open a United side that had more than 10 absentees in their squad for the game.
Had Ten Hag gone toe to toe with Klopp’s men, United would have been blown away and there’s a good chance that the former Ajax manager would be out of a job right now.
It was the right decision from Ten Hag and if there is anger from the Anfield club about the way United set up, then the Dutchman can feel justified with his tactical move.
