Jose Mourinho has insisted that he has an “amazing and incredible” relationship with one Manchester United legend ahead of Fenerbahce’s upcoming Europa League clash.

Manchester United will be reunited with Jose Mourinho, who managed the Red Devils from 2016 to 2018, when they travel to Istanbul in Turkey on Thursday.

The Red Devils kicked off their Europa League campaign against FC Twente last month and United were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s men then blew a 2-0 lead against Porto before coming from behind to seal a late 3-3 draw at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal earlier this month.

United are currently in 21st place in the new league-phase format of the Europa League, while Fenerbahce are 13th after one win and one draw so far.

Mourinho on special Man Utd relationship

Jose Mourinho took charge of Manchester United after Louis van Gaal was sacked and led the club to the League Cup and the Europa League in the 2016-17 season.

The 61-year-old Fenerbahce manager would lead United to second place in the Premier League and an FA Cup final in the following campaign.

However, Mourinho’s spell at Old Trafford would come to an end in 2018 after a poor start to the season resulted in his sacking from the Premier League club.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash, the ‘Special One’ opened up about his deep admiration for former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“My relationship with Alex was amazing and incredible, when my Netflix documentary comes out, you’ll know more about the reason why I have so much respect for him,” he said, as per The Independent.

Mourinho on Ferguson situation at Man Utd

Mourinho was also quizzed on the situation surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson after the United legend’s ambassador role was cut following talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ferguson is set to leave his ambassadorial duties at the end of the season, which is believed to be part of cut-costing measures from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos.

The decision to axe the 82-year-old Scotsman from the ambassador role sparked a heated reaction from United fans and Ferguson’s former players.

“The ambassadorial role, I don’t know in depth the situation, but it doesn’t matter why, it doesn’t matter what, Sir Alex has the most important thing of all, the love and respect of every Manchester United fan around the world,” Mourinho added.

“More important than any role, or a few pounds he doesn’t need… The most important thing is the love and respect every fan has for him.”
