Manchester United defender Harry Maguire followed in the footsteps of John O’Shea.
There is something special about scoring a winning goal at Anfield. John O’Shea once joked that he lived Gary Neville’s dream after doing exactly that.
O’Shea famously scored a stoppage time winner for United away at Liverpool in 2007, and he has not been allowed to forget it ever since.
Harry Maguire now joins the list of United cult heroes, also featuring Juan Mata and Diego Forlan, after scoring Manchester United’s winner at Anfield in 2025.

Harry Maguire bounces back
Harry Maguire headed in Manchester United’s winning goal in the 84th minute after an impressive first-time pass from Bruno Fernandes.
The goal capped a stunning personal turnaround from Maguire, who has grown into a real fan favourite at the club – even before his iconic winner.
Former United defender John O’Shea is delighted to see Maguire back on top.
Speaking to Stadium Astro, O’Shea said: “It’s fantastic for him, he was getting ridiculed for long enough.
“It’s brilliant. We’ve spoken about the mentality you need, and Harry’s shown it, he’s shown a great resilience to come back and fight his way back into the team.
O’Shea had a stern warning for Maguire and United about sustaining success beyond this result.
“He’s got to carry that on now. Let’s carry that on for a few weeks, a few months, until the New Year. Lots more football to be played and a lot more big battles to come.
“The next test is Brighton at home, a huge test for them.”
How United followed up 2007 victory
John O’Shea’s winner in 2007 came as Manchester United marched on to win the Premier League for the first time since 2002/03.
The March 2007 win was followed up with wins vs Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side did stumble – then losing 2-1 to Portsmouth.
United rallied by winning two of the next three games including a title-clinching victory away at Everton, with John O’Shea scoring the opening goal in the 4-2 win.
Ruben Amorim’s side are a long way off the heights of 2006/07, but there is something to build on, and O’Shea is absolutely serious when he says that United must follow up this victory.
