Manchester United have confirmed the exit of striker Joe Hugill on a season long loan.

After scoring an impressive goal for Manchester United against Rangers, Joe Hugill has been sent out on loan.

Erik ten Hag hailed Hugill as ‘different’ after making an impact in the 2-0 win, but it seemed the club had already made up their mind to sent him out on loan.

Hugill was pulled out of United’s USA tour squad this week, ahead of his loan move to Wigan, which has now been announced.

Joe Hugill to Wigan Athletic

Joe Hugill has been given Wigan Athletic’s number nine shirt, a show of confidence in his potential.

Hugill told the club website: “I am very delighted to be here. It’s been a long time coming, but I am over the moon to get it done, and can’t wait to get started.

“To get the number nine shirt is a massive honour, and I will wear it with pride. Hopefully, I can show what I can do with it.”

He shared an image on his Instagram page, where Manchester United’s account left a response which read: “We’ll be watching on with a close eye. Best of luck, Joe!”

Joe Hugill contract situation

Manchester United handed Joe Hugill a new contract earlier in 2024, which will run until 2026.

This was just before his loan spell at Burton Albion, where he scored on his debut, but failed to hit the net afterwards.

Now he will join Wigan for pre-season and look to kick on. He showed against Rangers that if you give him chances, he has a clinical edge and can put them away.

He scored 55 goals in all competitions for Manchester United’s academy teams and needs to play first team football for his development. Still only 20-years-old, Hugill has lots of potential and this loan could be the making of him.
