Jermaine Jenas has delivered a damning verdict on Ruben Amorim’s in-game management as the pressure mounts on the Manchester United head coach.

Questions are being asked of Ruben Amorim after Manchester United’s dire start to the 2025/26 season.

With just two wins from the first six Premier League games, the under-pressure Portuguese coach is trying to rally his troops before United take on Sunderland on Saturday.

It’s a crucial game because United lost 3-1 against Brentford last time out, so there is a desperate need to get back to winning ways before the October international break.

Last week’s defeat means Amorim has yet to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League since arriving at Old Trafford last November.

United now sit in 14^th, having lost three games, which has prompted concerns from the fanbase and pundits alike.

Amorim is preparing for his 50^th game in charge of United when Sunderland visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

It’s an opportunity for the head coach to get his team back to winning ways, which might help reduce speculation over his job while the internationals take place.

Ahead of the game, former Premier League midfielder turned pundit Jermaine Jenas has revealed that Amorim’s in-game management makes him angry.

Speaking on Wildcards, a podcast with Jermaine Pennant, Jenas said: “One of the things that is infuriating me about United, I’d like to know what United fans think about this, right?”

“But every single time I watch Manchester United play, he takes off a centre-half off and replaces him with another centre-half. When you’re losing as well. Like, I can’t understand the theory, you know.

“Ok, if Maguire, for example, booked and he’s getting put under a lot of pressure, or he’s having a nightmare, then fair enough.

“He got caught out for the goal, I thought, right? But when you’re losing 2-1, why are you bringing off Maguire to put on Leny Yoro?

“Then he did a madness with Mason Mount. It was like he brought on Mason Mount and then Mason Mount ended up at left wing back.”

Jenas wasn’t alone in this view, as Gary Neville was also critical of Amorim’s decision to play Mason Mount at left wing-back.

Ruben Amorim must settle on his best defence

If Amorim wants to play with a back three, it’s time he settles on the strongest trio to lead United from the back.

Harry Maguire has been brought back into the line-up in recent weeks, but that means leaving Leny Yoro out, which will raise more eyebrows as time goes on.

As part of the leadership group in United’s dressing room, Maguire has a key role in rallying players behind Amorim, so he may keep his place in the team.

United would stand a better chance of going on a winning run if the head coach could settle on his strongest defence.

It is also worth noting that Lisandro Martinez’s return will come as a huge boost to Amorim.
