Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think it’s a sensible appointment.
“You talk about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who had done it before as an interim. He did well.
“I thought this [was] the more sensible one out of the two. I’ve met Michael and played against him.
“He’s a student of the game. He knows the game inside out.”

United are seventh in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are only three points adrift from fourth-place Liverpool in the race for the top four this season.
However, the Red Devils face two massive upcoming tests against second-place Manchester City and Premier League leaders Arsenal under Carrick’s reign.
Redknapp has predicted United to finish in the top four or fifth under Carrick, but he added that securing Champions League football would be huge for the club legend.

“I think he’s just got to do his best to get them into the top four or five,” he added.
“If he achieves Champions League football, I think that would be a great achievement for him.
“He did a really good job at Middlesbrough. He didn’t quite get them into the Premier League, so I think he’ll do a good job.”
Man Utd will host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon for the Manchester derby before travelling to the Emirates to face Arsenal on 25th January.
