Jason Wilcox explains why Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as head coach

Manchester United sporting director Jason Wilcox finds himself under pressure following the change of management at Old Trafford.

According to reports, Ruben Amorim fell out with Jason Wilcox just days before he was sacked as Manchester United head coach.

Wilcox admits to interfering with tactics, and Amorim lashed out at the club hierarchy as his final action in charge of the Red Devils.

Darren Fletcher stepped up for a two-game spell as interim head coach, but Jason Wilcox was involved in the process to hire Michael Carrick as head coach for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Jason Wilcox comments on Michael Carrick appointment

Carrick’s appointment was made official on Tuesday evening, and Wilcox released a statement alongside the announcement.

As per United’s official website, Wilcox said: “Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.

“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”

Wilcox is targeting Champions League qualification this season, so that will be the objective for Carrick and his backroom staff between now and the end of the campaign.

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, but are just one point away from fifth position.

Jason Wilcox’s reputation depends on Michael Carrick

United supporters are understandably frustrated at the lack of vision shown by Ineos in recent weeks.

Amorim was publicly supported by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and promised three years in charge of the club. Just months later, he was sacked.

Now United are looking for a short-term win with Carrick before making a long-term appointment in the summer.

Frustration towards the board has already been building up, and Wilcox’s reputation is very much on the line from now until the end of the season.
