Influential Saudi Arabia figure Turki Al-Sheikh sparks major Man Utd takeover bid speculation with ‘best news’ claim

Key Saudi Arabian official Turki Al-Sheikh has dropped a cryptic – and bombshell – update on the potential interest of a “new investor” trying to buy Manchester United.

The Glazers have remained in charge of Manchester United since their controversial takeover bid of the Premier League club was completed back in 2005.

The highly divisive United owners have flirted with selling the Red Devils in the past, but the Glazers have retained their majority stake in the Old Trafford outfit.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have since become involved at the Premier League club after the 72-year-old British billionaire’s minority stake purchase.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s intention to complete a minority takeover of United was announced in 2023 and the Ineos chief subsequently became co-owner of the club in 2024.

Saudi Arabian figure Turki Al-Sheikh shares the ‘best news’ that he has now heard about Man Utd

Ineos are in control of football operations at Old Trafford as part of the deal that was struck under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who initially secured a 27.7 per cent stake.

Manchester United co-owner Ratcliffe has since seen his minority stake increase to 28.94 per cent, following his initial investment of £1.2 billion in 2023.

Turki Al-Sheikh, who is leading the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) for Saudi Arabia, has now teased a potential massive rumour around the Premier League club.

The Daily Mail reports that the 44-year-old GEA chairman took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and shared what he has heard about United.

“The best news I heard today is that Manchester United is now in an advanced stage of completing a deal to sell to a new investor – I hope he’s better than the previous owners,” he tweeted.

According to The Daily Mail, it remains ‘unclear’ if there is any serious ‘substance’ that backs up the claim that Turki Al-Sheikh has made on his social media profile.

However, the newspaper suggested that the adviser to Mohammed bin Salman’s Saudi Arabia regime could instead be taking a swipe at the Glazers or Ratcliffe.

It has been reported that United could potentially secure a lucrative deal if the Red Devils agree to visit Saudi Arabia during the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The Daily Mail has cited ‘industry sources’ by suggesting that the Premier League club could bag a hefty £10m if the Red Devils do include Saudi Arabia in their plans.

BBC Sport suggested that the chance is ‘high’ for United to include at ‘least one’ match alongside potential training in Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Dubai in the near future.

The news outlet claimed that the aforementioned training and match for United could take place in either November or December 2025 or even in January 2026.
