If one Manchester United player wanted to force a move away in January – his ‘audition’ went terribly

Last night was an opportunity for one Manchester United player to impress a potential buyer amid links in the summer – but in his ‘audition’, it’s safe to say he fluffed his lines.

The Champions League returned for Manchester United last night and it couldn’t have been a tougher baptism of fire back into the competition with a daunting trip to the Allianz Arena to face the Bundesliga champions – Bayern Munich.

There was little expectation headed into the fixture, but the defeat was still depleting due to the performance from Erik ten Hag‘s side. Despite the result not looking too bad on paper, a number of shocking performances, individual mistakes and some downright laziness from players is enough to leave United fans seriously upset after last night’s antics.

A few fans will already be calling for the selling of a few names in the next window. One player included had a cameo last night, against a side that were reportedly interested in his signature in the summer.

Bayern wanted McTominay over the summer

Bayern were on the hunt for a defensive midfielder in the window (not that they needed it against United) and Scott McTominay was a name heavily linked.

It was reported Thomas Tuchel was a fan of the Scotsman. German outlet BILD says that the German champions were very interested in the United midfielder and ‘wanted to get things moving’ in regard to the deal being completed.

However, the German side pursued Joao Palhinha from Fulham but didn’t sign him either – which means they’re still in the market for a midfielder in January.

So now, according to The Mirror, they could well be set to step up their interest once again in the United academy player but may be having second thoughts after last night.

McTominay’s Bayern ‘audition’ went terribly

Such as he ‘auditioned‘ for the right to stay at Manchester United back in pre-season, this could’ve been McTominay’s shot to impress Munich amid recent rumours.

He certainly didn’t do that and may very well have scuppered his chances.

The 26-year-old only had a brief cameo, coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute, but has managed to go viral with a clip of him not tracking back.

He also made little contribution going forward despite being sent straight into the 10 position.

Not a great impression from McTominay. Let’s see if he conjures up anything in the home leg.
