What the weekend results mean for Manchester United.
After the 3-2 win over Liverpool, Manchester United required four points to guarantee third place.
Michael Carrick‘s side then laboured to a 0-0 draw at Sunderland at the weekend, gaining only one point.
So do United now need three further points? The answer is no, thanks to other results this weekend.

What is your MESSAGE to Michael Carrick after Man Utd’s draw with Sunderland?
Manchester United need only one point
Manchester United’s point at Sunderland was not a poor result due to Liverpool and Aston Villa also failing to win.
Liverpool could only draw 1-1 with freefalling Chelsea, while Aston Villa had to settle for a 2-2 draw with relegated Burnley.
It means Manchester United have a six-point advantage over both clubs, and need only one more point to guarantee third place in the Premier League table.

Aston Villa cannot realistically finish above Manchester United due to their vastly inferior goal difference.
Liverpool’s goal difference is only three worse than United’s.
In the event that Liverpool win their two remaining fixtures and United lose theirs, both teams would be level on 65 points, and the goal difference swing could change.
Just one more point will take Manchester United to 66 points, a figure that Liverpool can no longer reach.
Man Utd have drawn 0-0 at Sunderland – what is your INSTANT REACTION?
Two points dropped or one gained?
Man Utd and Liverpool’s remaining fixtures compared
Manchester United’s last two remaining fixtures are at home to Nottingham Forest and away at Brighton.
Hopefully United will get at least a point in the Forest game and wrap up third with a game to spare. It’s a match we fully expect to win.
It will also be the final home game of the season and Casemiro’s farewell to Old Trafford.

The result of the game against Nottingham Forest could become a moot point as Liverpool will play beforehand.
Arne Slot’s side face Aston Villa on Friday night at Villa Park.
Anything less than a win for Liverpool will mean they can no longer reach 65 points and catch Manchester United.
