How many points Manchester United now need to secure third place in 2025/26

Manchester United have already secured Champions League football next season, and are now playing to secure third place.

Michael Carrick does not want to rest on his laurels despite the club clinching Champions League qualification with a 3-2 win at home to Liverpool.

It is important to finish as high as possible in the league, for the team’s pride, and from a prize money perspective.

United are playing to clinch third place, ahead of competitors Liverpool and Aston Villa. So what is now required?

United’s point requirements

Manchester United have a six point advantage over both Liverpool and Aston Villa after the weekend.

Villa lost at home to relegation-threatened Tottenham.

United therefore require four points from the remaining three games to guarantee to finish third.

It’s technically possible that three points could still be enough due to goal difference – but this advantage over Liverpool would probably flip if we lost two of the last three.

And it really is that simple: Win one of the last three, and draw one, and third place will be guaranteed.

Michael Carrick will be pushing for wins in all three of course, in order to keep up momentum and reach the maximum possible points tally of 73.

United’s final fixtures

Manchester United have three fixtures remaining, two away from home with one at Old Trafford sandwiched in between.

Note that the game against Nottingham Forest could be re-scheduled to Friday May 15 if they reach the Europa League Final.

It would be nice to get at least four points from the next two, so to enter the final game away at Brighton with no pressure at all.

This could also create an opportunity for Michael Carrick to rotate and bring in a couple of academy players to get their moment.
