Former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz gave England a reality check to leave Group L in the balance at the 2026 World Cup.
While the scoreless draw will come as a disappointment for England, it means both teams have done enough to qualify for the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
The only Manchester United player to feature was Marcus Rashford. He came on in the 83rd minute and failed to impact the game.
In contrast, the result had a much more positive reaction from Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz, who United fans will remember as Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant.

Which one of these World Cup legends would have been the best signing for Man Utd?
Carlos Queiroz used Man Utd’s experience to frustrate England at World Cup
England’s objective going into the game was to maintain the momentum they had built in the 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening match.
Thomas Tuchel’s side ultimately failed to achieve that, though Ghana deserve huge credit for how they frustrated the Three Lions with their organised tactics throughout the match.
There is no shying away from Ghana being an ultra-defensive side. The performance was typical of a Queiroz side, as they tend to be extremely difficult to break down.
The African nation set up to frustrate England, and they did that with a degree of discipline.
Speaking to ITV after the match, Queiroz explained that Ghana deserved the result they got on the night. He also explained that he used his time at United to learn how to frustrate the England national team, ensuring that Ghana would not let the game open up in Tuchel’s favour.
“Yeah, I think we deserved the result because the game is not only technical and tactical,” Queiroz said.
“It is also emotional. Bravery, courage, and perseverance, and resilience. Our team showed all of that in 90 minutes. They fight for each other during 90 minutes with only one thing in mind.
“The way they defend. They fight but they the mind on the goal all of the time.
“I think in the first half, we have England under control because we saw the England players frustrated. They don’t like to play this kind of game. I was there, I know. They like open games, but we did not concede in an easy way for them to play against us.
“Second half we started we started to control more and better. I think we have one or two chances, they had also. I think at the end of the day, the draw is a fair result.”

What Wayne Rooney said about Carlos Queiroz after England draw
Wayne Rooney knows Queiroz from his time at Old Trafford.
Reflecting on England’s scoreless draw against Ghana, Rooney hailed the African nation for their disciplined performance.
“You’re always hoping for that energy and that performance that we had against Croatia in the second half,” Rooney told the BBC.
“These games are so difficult when the teams sit back.
“You have to break them down, and you have to find the space. For me, the key was getting crosses into the box. That is where all the chances came from.
“That was a typical Carlos Queiroz performance. Ghana were excellent and they were disciplined.”
