Marcus Rashford settled for a 7-minute cameo, excluding six minutes of stoppage time, in England’s surprise draw against Ghana in Group L at the World Cup.
Many expected Marcus Rashford to start for England against Ghana after being overlooked in the opening game versus Croatia and making a positive impact off the bench.
It was Rashford’s fifth goal at a World Cup, matching Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally.
Contrary to widespread belief that a change was needed on the left wing, Anthony Gordon made a second consecutive start on the left wing for the Ghana match.

Which one of these World Cup legends would have been the best signing for Man Utd?
Marcus Rashford’s substitution came too late
Gordon getting the nod meant Rashford was named on the bench alongside his United teammate, Kobbie Mainoo.
Thomas Tuchel is no stranger to overlooking United players, as he proved with Harry Maguire ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
England had little going for them in the final third during the first 45 minutes, and when Tuchel made changes, he brought on Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers before Rashford was introduced in the 83rd minute.
The 28-year-old touched the ball 11 times, including one pass into the final third, but he also committed two fouls, which allowed Ghana to catch a breather towards the end.
Rashford will be disappointed for two reasons: failing to have an impact on the game as he did against Croatia, and not having enough time on the pitch to make a difference to the result.
It remains to be seen if Rashford will get the nod in England’s final group game against Panama on Saturday.

It was a great moment when Mainoo received his call-up for the World Cup.
Getting the call over Adam Wharton, Mainoo overcame huge struggles at Old Trafford in doing so.
