Harry Redknapp has ‘strong feeling’ over Erik ten Hag’s replacement at Man Utd, he could see change ‘come Christmas’

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has tipped one man to replace under-fire Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat by Christmas.

Erik ten Hag inked a new contract extension in the summer after Ineos opted to retain the 54-year-old Dutchman’s services for the current campaign.

The former Ajax manager’s future at the Premier League club had been in doubt after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos team took control of football operations at Old Trafford.

Ineos launched an end-of-season review following the 2023-24 campaign after Manchester United finished in a disappointing eighth place in the league table.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos had held talks with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel about potentially replacing Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

However, a deal to bring Thomas Tuchel failed to materialise and Ten Hag remained at the Red Devils for the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Redknapp on Man Utd and Ten Hag

Despite the poor Premier League finish in the 2023-24 season, Erik ten Hag was able to lead Manchester United to the FA Cup trophy at Wembley in May.

However, the Dutchman has once again been placed under the spotlight after United’s disappointing start to the 2024-25 Premier League season.

United have managed only eight points from a possible 18 in their opening six Premier League matches, with the Red Devils only winning twice in the league.

Ten Hag’s woes at Old Trafford continued on Sunday after 10-man United were comfortably beaten by Tottenham in a 3-0 Premier League defeat.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Harry Redknapp admitted that he has a “strong feeling” that Gareth Southgate will replace Ten Hag as United manager.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate was heavily linked with United after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner of the Premier League club.

The 54-year-old stepped down from his role as Three Lions head coach after England failed to beat Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in Germany.

When asked if he would take the United managerial role, Redknapp responded: “No, no. I am busy playing, trying to get the handicap down.

“I still have got a strong feeling we could see Gareth Southgate there come Christmas. That has been my view all along. It hasn’t really.”

Ten Hag on Man Utd hierarchy

Speaking after Sunday’s result at Old Trafford, Ten Hag insisted that United are “all on one page” and that the Red Devils “need some time.”

“No, I’m not thinking about this,” he said at his post-match press conference, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“I think we all made, in togetherness, this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group, in the summer.

“And also, we made the decision from a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how also we want to construct a squad.

“And they are all decision-making in togetherness, but also we knew it would take some time because of how the window went, some players late in, like [Manuel] Ugarte, we have to integrate him now.

“Also, we had to make some improvement in organisation, we still have to deal with some injuries, also from impact players, and I think we will get better there. We need some time.

“We are all on one page, one boat, together, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and players group as well. I don’t have that concern.”
