Harry Maguire reveals how much a ‘thoughtful’ message from Sir David Beckham meant to him during one of the most difficult periods of his career.
While it has been a slow start to the season for Manchester United, Harry Maguire provided one of the big moments when he scored the winner in the 2-1 win over Liverpool.
The 32-year-old signed for United from Leicester City seven years ago, but it was his first win at Anfield. Maguire has not played since that game due to an injury.
The arrival of Ruben Amorim as United’s head coach has contributed to Maguire’s rise in prominence, with the centre-back developing a habit for scoring late goals and regularly starring in the back-three when fit.
Despite this, Maguire’s contract expires at the end of the season, and there have been no talks over an extension.
It remains to be seen if the England international will earn a new deal at Old Trafford.

Harry Maguire appreciates supportive David Beckham text message
Maguire deserves a lot of credit for overcoming such a difficult period in his career.
There was a time when he was subjected to significant abuse, including online trolling and a bomb threat at his house.
Maguire was infamously booed by England fans in 2022 when his name was read out at Wembley before the Three Lions beat the Ivory Coast 3-0.
It had been a difficult season for the defender at club level, but Gareth Southgate always stuck by the defender, who was arguably his most trusted lieutenant.
In a new interview with TNT Sports, Maguire speaks to his sister Daisey and opens up about a text message he received from Sir David Beckham when he was going through a difficult time.
“I got a message from David Beckham when I was going through a bad time,” Maguire said.
“He obviously went through a bad time during his career, many good times, and he’s such a role model, someone I looked up to growing up. Being a footballer, I was always trying to be David Beckham, but I ended up at centre-back while he got all the goals and assists on the wing.
“It was a long text, not something I can memorise. It was nice, really thoughtful, explained he’d been in a similar situation and how he overcame it. It was a nice text from someone who is such a figure in this country and a role model to so many people.”
Maguire will be hoping to return to the United line-up on Saturday when the Red Devils travel to Tottenham.
David Beckham struggled with abuse after infamous red card
Beckham’s wife, Victoria, previously revealed that her husband was ‘clinically depressed’ after his red card in the 1998 World Cup.
Her comments were part of a Netflix documentary about the former United star, who came through the academy before winning the famous treble in 1999.
Beckham was sent off against Argentina in 1998, after kicking out at Diego Simeone before England lost the match on penalties.
He dealt with heavy abuse in the late 1990s as a result.
Victoria said, as cited by Sky News: “He was absolutely broken. He was in pieces.
“He was really depressed, absolutely clinically depressed.”
