Harry Kane believes Manchester United deserve ‘credit’ for the way they fought back in the second half of Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich.
That is three defeats in a row now for Erik ten Hag. The first time Manchester United have lost this many games on a spin since 2009. The first time the Red Devils have conceded at least three goals in three straight games since 1978 too.
So while positives may be in short supply, at least United made a game of it at the Allianz Arena.
This was something which appeared very unlikely when Serge Gnabry doubled Bayern’s lead just moments after Leroy Sane’s oh-so avoidable opener, some amongst the travelling support perhaps fearing a repeat of that Anfield obliteration in the spring.

Manchester United lose on Champions League return
“A really good start to our campaign. Towards the end of the game, it got a bit frantic, but I think overall we controlled a lot of the possession. We probably should have been four or 5-1 up after we got the third,” Harry Kane, a target for Ten Hag at the start of the summer, tells the UEFA website.
“But, credit to United, they wanted to get back into the game. Overall, it’s three points and a really good start to the campaign.”
Then again, a bit of effort – a dash of personal pride – is the very least Ten Hag could have expected, major concerns arising once again about the mentality of a United side who’s heads appeared to drop almost immediately after Andre Onana spilled Sane’s drive over the line.
A midfield of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were left chasing shadows at times – the twinkle-toed Jamal Musiala turning the Allianz Arena turf into his own personal dancefloor – and the returns of Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo cannot come soon enough.
‘We can’t keep going like this’
“We are in a period (where) a lot is going against us. But we have to make our own luck,” Ten Hag tells the Man United website. “When we can’t keep going (like this) and we can’t keep consistent in doing the rules and the principles of our game.
“Then, you concede goals.”
