Gary Neville says how long Ineos will give Erik ten Hag before making decision on his future

Erik ten Hag kept his job as Manchester United manager in the summer – yet he is by no means safe.

Ineos held a performance-review at the end of the season, in which Erik ten Hag’s future as manager was debated.

After considering alternative options, Ineos decided to stick with Ten Hag. It came amid the high of United winning the FA Cup Final, and United needed that positivity to last.

It hasn’t. Three games into the 2024/25 season, United have one win and two losses.

Erik ten Hag future

Manchester United fans expressed frustration during the game and at the final whistle as Manchester United lost 3-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe was pictured looking frustrated in the stands too, an ominous sign for Erik ten Hag.

Club legend Gary Neville was asked during his commentary on the game, whether Ten Hag needs to worry after this result, and when pressure might begin to really intensify.

The Class of ’92 graduate told Sky Sports that Ineos will not hurry into a knee-jerk decision – but does believe their patience will not be infinite.

Neville said: “He is going to get, I think, until Christmas, there is no doubt about that.

“No doubt that Ineos, Dan Ashworth has got a calm to him.”

Neville knows United’s sporting director well, and is confident the manager will get time, yet must also improve.

United’s objectives

United are 14th in the Premier League after three games. There is no time to panic yet, of course. Yet there is some reason for concern.

The positivity from the Cup Final has now evaporated, and it feels like Ten Hag is back to square one.

United’s objective this season is to secure Champions League football via a top four finish. The team is already off the pace.

Last season United finished eighth and lost 14 league games. Three games in, there is little sign of change.

Ineos do have something to consider over the next few months, if there is no improvement.
