Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday proved there is a long road ahead for Ruben Amorim.

The 39-year-old had enjoyed an unbeaten start in his opening three games, but that run came to an abrupt end when Manchester United lost 2-0 to Arsenal.

Ultimately, the hosts capitalised on two set pieces to take all three points, with Ruben Amorim admitting United must improve on set pieces ahead of their next Arsenal clash in January.

There were a few positives to take from the performance, such as United completing more passes than Arsenal and an impressive debut display from Leny Yoro.

But Amorim cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines with United looking toothless when in possession.

United legend Gary Neville was full of praise for Amad, describing him as United’s best player over the last few weeks.

After the full-time whistle, however, Gary Neville highlighted two issues he believes will make Amorim and his coaching staff “furious”.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville said: “I’ll tell you what they will think as coaches, they’ll think there are some things in there tonight they can work from in terms of shape and keeping Arsenal quiet.

“They will be furious with the set pieces because they’ll feel that’s either them not setting the team up correctly or the team not doing it correctly. They’ll be most angry with that.

“They will also be annoyed at how they reacted to going a goal down and not going for it like Roy said.”

What is next for Man United and Ruben Amorim?

Amorim has had very little time to rest and think since joining United in mid-November.

The winter schedule has been relentless and, until February, United are playing every couple of days. Amorim has pointed out that United have had more games than training matches recently which has made it tough for him to get his ideas and style of play across to the squad.

Unfortunately for Amorim, the games continue to come thick and fast.

Up next is a visit from Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are currently sixth in the table but have lost three of their last four.

Following that, United travel across town to face Manchester City in what will be Amorim’s first derby match. Amorim led Sporting to a 4-1 win over City in the Champions League and will be hoping to replicate that result later this month.
