Manchester United fans have been sent into overdrive after Ruben Amorim’s Sporting hammered Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League.

All eyes were on Ruben Amorim on Tuesday night as his Sporting side welcomed Manchester City to Lisbon.

Amorim was appointed as Manchester United’s new head coach last week but is staying with Sporting until the international break.

United fans want a reason to dream right now and Amorim certainly provided that on Tuesday night.

Amorim’s Sporting fell 1-0 down early on against City but then scored four unanswered goals to rack up a stunning 4-1 victory.

This was Amorim’s final home game as Sporting boss and he was given an emotional send-off at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Ruben Amorim inflicts rare feat on Manchester City

This was quite the send-off for Amorim ahead of an away trip to Braga this weekend, his final game before joining up with United.

Viktor Gyokeres bagged a hat-trick in a thumping Sporting win, completely overshadowing his fellow Scandinavian striker Erling Haaland.

Gyokeres reportedly isn’t keen on joining United but Amorim may be tempted to try and change his mind after this demolition job.

United fans have every reason to be excited after that result and Amorim achieved something pretty rare in the process.

This was the first time City have conceded four goals in a Champions League game since losing 4-0 at Barcelona in 2016.

That was Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium, before he really turned City into his side.

City have conceded three goals on a number of occasions since that day, but Amorim’s Sporting are the first to score four against them in some eight years.

Two penalties will certainly help but Sporting deserved this thumping win as United fans get excited about Amorim.

Amorim achieves something Erik ten Hag couldn’t

We would still preach some caution here.

This was a great Sporting display but Amorim has been building this team for more than four years.

Expecting Amorim to walk in and replicate this kind of display at United immediately would be a little too lofty.

Erik ten Hag beat Guardiola’s City twice but never beat them by more than one goal, securing 2-1 victories in both instances.

Amorim has now beaten City by three clear goals as he waves goodbye to thousands of Sporting fans in Lisbon.

Amorim’s first United game will come against Ipswich Town later this month and United fans would love to see him start with a 4-1 win there too.
