Ruben Amorim cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines as Manchester United lost to Arsenal.
The 2-0 defeat at the Emirates was Ruben Amorim’s first as head coach of Manchester United and also his first league defeat in 360 days as a manager.
The Red Devils went toe-to-toe with the Gunners but were ultimately undone by set pieces with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba scoring from two second-half corners.
There were plenty of positives to take from the Arsenal defeat, including an impressive debut from Leny Yoro at the back, but United’s biggest issue was their lack of threat up front.
Mason Mount had very little impact on his return to the starting lineup while Marcus Rashford also struggled to follow up on his two-goal display against Everton.

Marcus Rashford irritated Ruben Amorim on sidelines
Rashford was dropped to the bench as part of Amorim’s rotation policy but he came on as a substitute just before the hour mark as United chased an equaliser.
Unfortunately, Rashford did not have the desired impact and instead he sloppily gave away the corner that led to Arsenal’s second.
The Athletic point out another incident that occurred seven minutes from the end of the match that caused Amorim to lash out on the sidelines.
As United pushed for a goal, Andre Onana had found Bruno Fernandes in space, but Rashford “dropped deep to collect possession, rather than run in behind”. As pointed out in the report, “this seemed to irritate Amorim as he spun back to his bench”.
To make matters worse, Rashford then misplaced a pass out to Amad on the wing, which “prompted Amorim to chuck his water bottle on the floor”.
How Marcus Rashford performed vs Arsenal
Inconsistency has been a big problem for Rashford and that seemed to be the case again at The Emirates. Just days after scoring twice against Everton, he failed to have a positive impact against the Gunners.
Roy Keane slammed Rashford’s “shocking” performance, criticising him for his “sloppy” decision-making.
In his 31 minutes on the pitch, Rashford lost possession six times – one of which led to Arsenal’s second goal.
He didn’t win a single duel and failed to complete any dribbles, with an overall passing accuracy of 82 percent.
| Minutes played | 31 |
| Touches | 22 |
| Accurate passes | 82% (9/11) |
| Possession lost | 6 |
| Dribbles completed | 0% (0/1) |
Just as it looked like Rashford was building up some form under Amorim, his performance against Arsenal showed there is still lots of work to be done.
