Gary Neville has dropped his two cents on Ruben Amorim after Manchester United’s 4-0 Premier League steam-rolling of Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in November after he left Sporting CP and agreed to succeed Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.
The 39-year-old Portuguese manager oversaw a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road in his first match in charge of the Red Devils.
Amorim then managed his first match at Old Trafford and United came from behind to beat Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League last week.
The former Sporting CP manager, who inked a contract with United until June 2027, led the Red Devils to a convincing win on the weekend in the Premier League.
Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both bagged braces on Sunday and the Red Devils outclassed Sean Dyche’s Everton side at Old Trafford.
Neville reacts to Amorim and Man Utd
Manchester United are currently ninth in the Premier League table after their win over Everton and the Red Devils are only four points off from the top four.
Ruben Amorim’s men face a tough test in their upcoming Premier League fixtures, with the Red Devils set to face Arsenal and Manchester City away from home.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Gary Neville admitted that Amorim will be “happy” with the back-to-back wins that United have had across all competitions.
The 49-year-old United legend said that it was “mad” to see that the Red Devils were only “four or five points off” from challenging for a place in the top four.
However, Neville has played down the idea that Amorim’s side can climb into the top four compared with other teams from the top six.
“Obviously, it was a good win. Coming back in midweek and winning, Ruben Amorim will be happy,” he said on The Gary Neville Podcast.
“They’re a long way off, no doubt about that, but they’ve gone up into the top half of the table.
“They’re only four or five points off the top four, which is mad really, but I don’t think they’re quite at that level yet to give anybody confidence that they can get there.
“The teams that are above them, particularly in the top six are well ahead of them in terms of performance levels. But he’ll be happy at the end of his first week of matches.”
Amorim plays down top-four narrative
When asked if United could challenge for the Premier League top four, Amorim switched the focus to the Red Devils’ match against Arsenal on Wednesday.
“If I said no, you would say I cannot be a Manchester United coach,” he said at his post-match press conference.
“But I want to be honest with our fans, so let’s focus on the performance, not the results.
“We’ll see in the end. I will be judged by the place that we finish, I know that, but let’s just focus on the next game and look at the performance.
“On Thursday, we [won] 3-2, but I think we deserved more. Today was a 4-0 [win], but I think Everton deserved more.
“So, let’s focus on the performance, congratulations to the lads, let’s rest, recover and think about Arsenal.”
