Manchester United legends Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were all asked to name the best German player of all time — but there was a major twist.

The Overlap’s TikTok account shared a clip of the aforementioned former Manchester United trio being asked to pick one standout German player in history.

However, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Gary Neville were unable to have Germany and Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer as their answer to the question.

Franz Beckenbauer is considered one of the best players of all time and is widely regarded as one of the finest talents in the history of German football.

The former Bayern Munich and Germany defender lifted the World Cup with West Germany in 1974 and captured the prestigious Ballon d’Or award twice in his career.

Beckenbauer also won four Bundesliga trophies, three European Cups, a European Cup Winners’ Cup and four German Cups as a prolific Bayern Munich player.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane’s pick for the best German player outside of Franz Beckenbauer

Roy Keane was the first up to name the best German player of all time — excluding Franz Beckenbauer — with the Manchester United legend picking Lothar Matthaus.

Following on from the iconic former United captain, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville paused for a moment before he threw his backing behind Lothar Matthaus as well.

A recipient of France Football’s Ballon d’Or prize in 1990, Matthaus played under Beckenbauer when the former Bayern Munich legend was West Germany manager.

The 54-year-old German former midfielder was the skipper of West Germany and Beckenbauer’s men lifted the 1990 World Cup after beating Argentina in the final.

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Matthaus is seen as one of the best midfielders of all time after his remarkable playing career for both club and country.

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes snubbed Lothar Matthaus for his choice for Germany’s best player ever

While Lothar Matthaus received the backing of Gary Neville and Roy Keane, the same could not be said for former United and England midfielder Paul Scholes.

Scholes went for another Germany and Bayern Munich legend instead, with the pundit settling on his pick as iconic former forward Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Ian Wright, a regular on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, popped up after Scholes in the clip and also offered his two cents on the German ‘GOAT’ debate.

Forget both Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Matthaus, as Arsenal legend Ian Wright threw his support behind Germany and Bayern Munich icon Thomas Muller.
