Gary Lineker told Micah Richards how he is in awe at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes potentially equalling a huge Premier League feat this season.

Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a stellar second half of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign after Ruben Amorim was sacked as Manchester United manager.

The 31-year-old Man Utd captain was playing in a deep midfield role under Ruben Amorim before Michael Carrick restored Fernandes to a more advanced position.

Fernandes has netted seven times in 29 matches across all competitions this season, but the United star has notched up an impressive 17 assists overall for his side.

Gary Lineker on Bruno Fernandes closing in on the Premier League assist record after Man Utd’s win over Aston Villa

Bruno Fernandes has picked up eight assists in nine Premier League matches during Michael Carrick’s reign as interim head coach of Manchester United so far.

The Red Devils midfielder bagged a brace of assists on Sunday afternoon after Man Utd’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

Speaking on their podcast, Micah Richards waxed lyrical about Fernandes’ first assist from a corner-kick against Aston Villa, from which Casemiro scored a superb header.

“You don’t get… the delivery from Bruno,” he said on The Rest Is Football.

“I think he’s playing some of the best football of his career. I really do. People might say, ‘Well, yeah, he should score more goals.’

“But I think that’s 16 assists he’s got now in the Premier League from the positions that he’s running the game every time I watch him.”

Gary Lineker said it was “special” that Fernandes was close to equalling the Premier League assist record of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in a single season.

“He’s so good,” he added.

“[He is at] 16 assists, as you [Richards] said. He only needs four more to equal Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in a single season, which would be very special.”

Bruno Fernandes’ reaction to his Premier League assist tally surpassing what Man Utd legend Sir David Beckham did

Fernandes’ performance for Man Utd against Villa allowed him to surpass the Man Utd assist record for a single season set by Sir David Beckham at Old Trafford.

Sir David Beckham notched up 15 assists in the 1999-00 Premier League season, while Fernandes’ two latest assists put him ahead of the legendary ex-United No 7.

Speaking on breaking Beckham’s record at United, Red Devils skipper Fernandes said: “Obviously, it’s very nice. It’s a very good achievement.”

As per Manchester United’s official website, Fernandes told MUTV as well: “We’re talking about one of the best players, certainly [the best] strikers of anyone in the box.

“So, I’m very pleased to do that.”

Fernandes has eight Premier League matches remaining in the current season to equal or break the 20-assist record set by both Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
