Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were both in full agreement over who has the better overall squad between Manchester United and one other Premier League team.
Ruben Amorim has inherited a tough challenge at Manchester United after he succeeded Erik ten Hag as Red Devils manager in 2024.
Erik ten Hag oversaw a disastrous start to the Red Devils’ 2024-25 Premier League campaign and the former United manager was sacked last October.
Amorim left Sporting CP after United triggered his £9.25m release clause and the 39-year-old Portuguese manager has overseen a rocky start to life at Old Trafford.
United languish in 13th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are 10 points clear of 18th-place Ipswich Town after 22 matches played.
The Red Devils have only won seven league matches this season and Amorim’s men are currently 14 points adrift from the Premier League top four.

Lineker makes Man Utd comparison
Manchester United suffered their latest setback on the weekend after their first defeat of 2025 under former Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.
Brighton arrived at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and the Seagulls secured a 3-1 win in their Premier League encounter with United.
Amorim has now switched his attention away from the Premier League ahead of the Red Devils resuming their Europa League campaign on Thursday evening.
Amorim’s United side will host Scottish side Rangers at Old Trafford, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker suggested that Tottenham are in a “better place” than United, despite Spurs’ problems this season.
“I think if you had everyone fit, then Tottenham are in a better place than Manchester United,” he said.
“I think if I look at the overall squad, then they’ve probably got a little bit more than United.”
Lineker added: “United need to do more in the transfer market. Obviously, both of them are in a bit of a rut at the present.”
Shearer reacts to Lineker’s Man Utd claim
Tottenham, much like United, have seriously underwhelmed in the Premier League season and Ange Postecoglou’s future at Spurs appears to be on a knife-edge.
Spurs are 15th in the Premier League table and Ange Postecoglou’s men are two points behind United, with Tottenham eight points clear of the relegation zone.
Tottenham produced a lacklustre display on the weekend and suffered a 3-2 Premier League defeat to David Moyes’ Everton side at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Alan Shearer was on the same wavelength as The Rest Is Football co-host Lineker and the Premier League legend believes Spurs have a better squad than United.
“I wouldn’t disagree with that,” he said.
“If they ever get their players back to fitness, they’re slightly better than Manchester United’s first XI.”
