Mason Greenwood has scored his first goal in Marseille colours after his transfer from Manchester United.
The English forward departed Old Trafford for good this summer, moving to Ligue 1 with Olympique Marseille for £26.7million – one of the most expensive departures in Manchester United history.
Mason Greenwood made his debut for Marseille in a pre-season friendly recently, notching 45 minutes for his new side, although he didn’t have much of an effect on the game.
But in his most recent appearance, the 22-year-old fully announced himself to Les Phocéens. He picked up a goal as they breezed past Pau on Saturday evening.

French press react to Mason Greenwood goal
Greenwood opened up his account for his new side after scoring the first goal in what was a 3-0 win for Roberto de Zerbi’s side.
The youngster picked up the ball in the penalty area after a mad scramble in the box, feinted past one defender and eventually saw his deflected shot connect with the bar – then into the back of the net.
French press reacted to Greenwood’s strike, and were impressed with his 73 minutes on the pitch. Lephoceen wrote: ‘Mason Greenwood scored his first goal with OM against Pau in their second friendly match (3-0).
‘The 22-year-old striker showed snippets of his talent, notably by scoring after a move initiated by Amine Harit. Although the opponent is from Ligue 2, the England international impressed with his play, scoring with a magnificent lob.’
‘He was substituted in the 73rd minute, but has already left a positive impression. Fans are looking forward to the next friendly against Sunderland, where his adaptation and impact can be better assessed.’
Sport put: ‘Recruited for 31.6 million euros, Mason Greenwood scored his first goal with Olympique de Marseille in the friendly match against Pau (3-0) on Saturday.’
‘After a shot from Azzedine Ounahi was saved, Greenwood scored with the help of the bar and a deflected shot, also showing good playing qualities.’
Briefly noted: ‘Greenwood made his debut for his new club and scored his first goal during a pre-season friendly against French second-division side Pau FC on Saturday.’
‘The 21-year-old striker netted the opening goal by capitalising on a scramble in the box and poking the ball past the opposition keeper.’
‘Greenwood’s goal represents a promising start to his Marseille career after his £26.7 million move from Manchester United this summer. The Englishman aims to rejuvenate his career in France following a challenging period at United.’
Greenwood will thrive at Marseille
After a massively successful loan spell at Getafe last season, Greenwood now has to live up to a hefty price tag for Marseille – but we think he’ll have no issues whatsoever.
The French league is arguably easier than that of the Spanish, meaning the Manchester United academy graduate will have the opportunity to score even more goals than he did for the Gironistes.
Whether the forward sees Marseille as a stepping stone remains to be seen, but if he does have a good year in France – Manchester United could soon be reaping the rewards of Greenwood’s sell-on clause.
