Former Premier League manager ‘awaiting call’ from Man United after hearing Ten Hag rumours

A former Premier League manager is reportedly ‘awaiting a call’ from Manchester United as the pressure on Erik ten Hag continues to build.

It’s fair to say that Erik ten Hag has not had the start to the season he wanted for Manchester United, and last season’s dominant home form has disappeared.

The pressure building on the Dutchman has meant that other managers have been linked with the post at Old Trafford, in the event Ten Hag were to leave. Ruben Amorim and Zinedine Zidane have been linked with the United job by The Times but another name has come forward.

Whether the Red Devils should sack Ten Hag is another matter entirely.

United interest

According to a report from Spanish outlet SPORT, former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui has been linked with the post at Old Trafford if a managerial change were to occur.

SPORT claims that Ten Hag’s job is ‘hanging by a thread’ after a poor run of form but the report says that United would have to stump up €17 million (£14 million) as compensation for the Dutchman.

It is said that Lopetegui, who was sacked by Wolves after falling out with the club owners over their dealings in the transfer market according to The Athletic, would be very keen on the job.

Due to Lopetegui being without a club, this move is looked at much more favourably by the powers that be at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard was on Manchester United’s four-man shortlist which saw Ten Hag hired, and is the only one of those alternatives currently available.

Sticking with Ten Hag

Despite the struggles Ten Hag has had this season, staying with the Dutchman, as long as he sticks to his principles, would be the way to go.

Mikel Arteta was given three years before his Arsenal side began to show signs of a proper team and one that could challenge for the title.

United need to stay patient over the 53-year-old just like Arsenal did with Arteta, sticking with the Dutchman could be a masterstroke of epic proportions if results begin to pick up at Old Trafford.
