Manchester United could turn to Sporting boss Ruben Amorim as a replacement for under-fire Erik ten Hag.

It was only a matter of time until the managerial rumours really started to ramp up at Manchester United.

3-0 defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle United in the last few days have piled the pressure on boss Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is now desperate for a result and defeat at Fulham this weekend could leave United with a decision to make.

Manchester United consider Sporting boss Ruben Amorim

The Times now state that United have already started considering potential replacements for Ten Hag.

One of the names in the mix is Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, with United allegedly viewing him as a potential appointment.

The club’s ownership situation is something of a problem here and could impact any managerial move.

Zinedine Zidane is in the mix too but Amorim offers something a little different to the three-time Champions League winner.

The Portuguese coach is still only 38 and has become one of the top young coaches in Europe over the last few years.

Whether success in Portugal can translate to United remains to be seen but Amorim could now become a target if Ten Hag bites the bullet.

Who is United target Ruben Amorim?

Some may remember Amorim from his playing days having turned out for Benfica and the Portuguese national team.

A midfielder as a player, Amorim turned to coaching in 2018 and took charge of Casa Pia before moving to coach Brag’as B team.

Amorim landed the top job at Braga but took charge of just 13 games, winning 10 and losing just two before Sporting pounced.

Sporting paid a hefty €10million (£8.7million) to land Amorim, which United captain Bruno Fernandes called ‘surprising’ just weeks after he left Sporting for Old Trafford.

Amorim won a league title in his first season as Sporting boss and has won 118 of his 172 games in charge.

Amorim sit top of the league this season, dropping just two points in an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Going for somebody so young would be a gamble, but United may have seen something special in Amorim.
