A former Manchester United winger has shared his verdict on Erik ten Hag’s men securing a hard-fought Premier League point against rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
United manager Ten Hag was under mounting pressure going into the showdown with Liverpool after the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League last week.
Ten Hag was without captain Bruno Fernandes for the Liverpool clash due to a suspension and had other players sidelined through injury, including Harry Maguire.
However, United defied what many people thought would be a thumping defeat at the hands of Liverpool and walked away with a well-deserved draw at Anfield.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was furious with the scoreline of the match and made a bizarre claim about United’s performance in a post-match interview.
However, Van Dijk’s ‘salty’ comments were torn apart by United legend Roy Keane, who pulled no punches towards the Reds defender with his scathing response.
Ex-United winger’s reaction to Liverpool match
United are seventh after the 0-0 draw against Liverpool and the Red Devils are six points adrift of fourth-place Manchester City in the Premier League table.
Ten Hag will no doubt be happy with United avoiding a defeat, keeping a clean sheet and securing a point in the race for a top-four finish this season.
United fans on social media were also content with the Red Devils holding off Liverpool at Anfield after the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.
Speaking on X, formerly Twitter, ex-United winger Gordon Hill admitted that the Red Devils showed “better intensity” with their performance against Liverpool.
“A point is a point. And a better intensity. A well-deserved point,” he wrote.
United were reduced to 10 men in the dying stages after referee Michael Oliver brandished back-to-back yellow cards in mere seconds to send Diogo Dalot off.
When asked about his thoughts on Oliver’s decision, Hill responded: “Darren, we have enough problems [than] to worry about the ref.”
Ten Hag happy with United players’ performances
United defender Raphael Varane, whose future has been in doubt at Old Trafford, impressed with his showing during the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.
Kobbie Mainoo also earned rave reviews from United fans for his calm and composed performance, with the 18-year-old making a real mark against Liverpool.
Speaking after the Liverpool match, Ten Hag praised United midfielder Mainoo and admitted that he is the type of player who can “really hurt” the opposition.
“If you are good enough, you are old enough. He proved that,” he said (via Manchester United’s official website).
“When he gets used more often to those games, we will get even more joy from it.
“Because then his scanning and his speed of action, he can get such passes, three or four passes in and get switches in, and he is the player who can really hurt opponents.”
