Former Man Utd duo continue to give Ten Hag reasons to regret sale after quality displays

Former Manchester United players Teden Mengi and Anthony Elanga have been proving their worth after being sold during the summer.

Manchester United sold quite a few academy graduates in the summer as Erik ten Hag went about overhauling the squad to allow younger players to come through.

Two casualties of this were Teden Mengi and Anthony Elanga who were both sold, joining other Premier League sides for game time at the highest level.

Mengi was signed by Luton Town in August, a move which has since been questioned by Rio Ferdinand who raved about the defender’s potential ability, admitting injuries were all that held him back.

Meanwhile, Elanga was sold to Nottingham Forest and he has since gone on to outperform every one of United’s own attackers this season in the Premier League.

But on Saturday afternoon, both captured the headlines as they sent a message to Ten Hag which we imagine will have the Dutchman second-guessing his decision to sell both.

Former United pair impressive

Both players were playing on Saturday during the multiple 3 pm kick-offs. Mengi faced Crystal Palace while Elanga faced Brighton.

Mengi was crucial in Luton Town’s win against Palace at Kenilworth Road as he scored the opening goal with a brilliant header. Scoring a 7.7 rating on SofaScore, Mengi also made 15 defensive contributions.

Amid the defensive turmoil and injury woes United are currently facing, Mengi looks like a player we could’ve done with being at the club to come into the team at times like this.

Elanga was on the losing side for Forest, however, individually put in a great display. He scored to make it three goals and three assists so far this season and also created one big chance.

While it is great to see youth players doing so well, we can’t help but wish it was at our club instead of elsewhere.

Ten Hag and United need to learn a lesson here

Selling prospects for so cheap, only to see them performing in the league months later is a little embarrassing and United need to learn from this.

One easy way to learn from and avoid this is to utilise the loan market in order to give youngsters the chance to prove themselves elsewhere while retaining them.

It may be selfish from the club, but it is what all the top and most successful sides do. Hopefully, the new hierarchy who arrive along with Sir Jim Ratcliffe are of similar thinking and we don’t sell any players cheap until we know they aren’t worth keeping.
