Ruben Amorim has shared an update on Manchester United’s plan for one first-team Red Devils player who failed to make a summer move away from Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old Manchester United manager spoke at the Carrington training complex on Friday ahead of the Premier League match against Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim is once again feeling the heat in the Old Trafford hot seat after Manchester United lost 3-0 to Manchester City in the Premier League last week.

United defeated Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford in August to pick up their first win of the season, but the Red Devils were unable to build on their momentum against City.

A first-half Phil Foden opener and a second-half Erling Haaland brace sealed all three Premier League points for City in the first Manchester derby of the 2025-26 season.

The Red Devils tumbled down to 14th place in the Premier League table after United’s defeat to City at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola’s side climbing to eighth.

Ruben Amorim breaks his silence on Man Utd man Tyrell Malacia after player’s failed Old Trafford exit

Tyrell Malacia had been on the Manchester United chopping block and had been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford under manager Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year-old Dutchman spent the second half of last season out on loan at PSV Eindhoven before returning to the Premier League club in July after his deal expired.

United wanted to offload Tyrell Malacia from Amorim’s squad, but the former Netherlands international’s late exit from Old Trafford fell through in the summer.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Chelsea match, Amorim revealed that the plan now is for Malacia to return first with the United Under-21s.

“He is returning with contact with the ball with the Under-21s, then we will see,” he said, as per The Manchester Evening News.

Tyrell Malacia is in Man Utd’s Premier League squad for the 2025-26 season and the former Feyenoord man’s role is still unclear

Tyrell Malacia was linked with Spanish side Elche and was on the verge of a deadline-day exit, but the move collapsed and left the defender in limbo land.

Turkish club Eyupspor also showed interest in Malacia after the Elche transfer fell through, but a move failed to materialise ahead of the window closing in Turkey.

It had been reported that the Red Devils had handed Amorim the ‘final decision’ over Malacia’s United future after the former PSV Eindhoven player remained at the club.

Malacia has been included in United’s 25-man Premier League squad and the former Feyenoord player could still play for the United first team again under Amorim.
